Building global firm out of Barcelona’s tech district

If you can guess what happens when two of the most global industries of our time intersect, you already get the idea of how a normal day at Newshore looks like…

No better place than our offices to illustrate the complementary, even symbiotic, relationship between airlines and technology, each of them doing its bit to make distances irrelevant.

Here this shrinkage of the globe is not just metaphorical, but very real: professionals from Spain, China, Sweden, Great Britain, Argentina, Colombia...working side by side to deliver projects for airlines in Russia, France, Hong Kong, Guinea...proof that you don’t need to be big to nurture the type of atmosphere where global talent can thrive.

The allure of Barcelona as an emerging global city is a powerful addition to the mix, as it acts as powerful magnet for young, educated, internationally mobile professionals. Not for nothing a recent report by the Boston Consulting Group has designated Barcelona as the 4th best city in the World to work in, only surpassed by London, New York and Berlin and well ahead of the likes of Paris and Dubai.

Besides the opportunities for professional growth if offers, the city is particularly attractive to those professionals looking to lead an active lifestyle. A case in point: the technology district, where Newshore’s office is located, sits next to one of Europe’s best urban beaches. Sharpening your surfing skills after a hard day’s work is not out of the question!

The quality of life in Barcelona was a powerful draw for Diana, a project manager who moved to the city from Newshore’s office in Colombia. “I like the atmosphere of this city, the culture and...well, yes, being by the beach is very nice too!”

To be clear, the practice of outdoor sports is not a requirement to work at Newshore (although most of our people do actually enjoy them!), but having an open, inquisitive mind most definitely is.

And the willingness to travel, sometimes to unsuspected places at a short notice, is much appreciated too!

“International assignments have had a very positive contribution to my career, they open up your mind to lots of new knowledge and new ways of doing things” explains Roger, one of the firm youngest managers. His fast progression from analyst to manager has been dotted by project assignments the World over - Paris, Mexico, Israel, Panama, Chile, Dubai and Argentina - including a six month stint with a customer in sunny Florida.

Expect more opportunities like these to continue popping up in the near future, as Newshore expands into new markets.

Flexible arrangements are not out of the question to bring in talent.

For example, Veronica Dunwell, a British-Argentinian consultant, has been instrumental in Newshore’s global expansion. Being based in the UK has not been an obstacle for her in coordinating multiple projects for airlines in Europe and the Americas.

Or Adriana, a Brazilian front-end developer and web usability expert that arrived to Barcelona after living for some time in Chicago. She started collaborating with Newshore as a freelancer under a flexible work arrangement and she progressively took on more responsibilities until she joined the team full time. Adriana’s job now spans two continents, as part of her team is based in Colombia.

Newshore has also set its sights on Asia, something that has come in handy to Andrés Fernández, a software architect from Argentina. Before joining Newshore, Andrés had the chance to work in quite a few projects that focused on Asian markets and get a good grasp of cultural and professional practices in that region. This is an experience that he has been able to put to good use at Newshore, as he has been working also on assignments in the region. Most recently in the Philippines, where he has helped set up and train Newshore’s local team.

Andrés came to Barcelona from his native Argentina by way of Israel, where he spent a year working in the tech industry. The quality of life and professional perspectives in Barcelona were key in him deciding the move three and a half years ago. “Besides the great climate, it is a very safe and well communicated city. When it comes to the labour market it also offers quite a lot of security to tech professionals as well”.

Barcelona has, indeed, become a major tech hub in the South of Europe, perhaps, as private equity organisation Invest Europe affirms, the top one in the region.

And companies like Newshore, through their ability to attract and retain talent from all over the World, are a big part of this success story.
